What follows is a shining example of Windows’ ‘love’ for PC gaming, and the complexity of the platform (which I like, EE4Lyfe, yo). It’s no Games for Windows Live, but it’s still to be seen whether it’s a lot better.

1. Buy the game. So far so good, though the Store app did say ‘something went wrong’. The money was taken from my credit card and the game was added to my library, so just a bug probably.

2. Try to install. Uh-oh.

Kinja'd!!!

It’s in Dutch, but I’m sure you’ll understand

According to the Windows Store, my 16 GB of RAM and my R9 Fury just disappeared. Same issue with Forza 6 Apex, but that was installed when it just came out, and it’s still playable.

Horizon also requires the Windows 10 Anniversary Update apparently, so I’m currently installing that. Let’s hope it solves the other problems as well.

3. Try to install - part 2. After updating, I’m now allowed to install the game. 60 GB of free space, really?! Disk cleaning it is.

4. Try to install - part 3. Currently downloading...

5. Launch - part 1. Surprise, surprise, graphics driver update needed.

6. Launch - part 2. Driver update done. I can now no longer access the Windows Store (closes immediately, presumably due to the Anniversary Update), but I can access Horizon from the start menu, so all is well (enough) for the moment. Fingers crossed.

7. Enjoy! It’s alive! First impressions: lots of fun, Microsoft half-assed 21:9 support, some annoying stuttering, especially in the real-time rendered cutscenes ( probably GPU driver related? issue with both NVIDIA and AMD). Australians drive on the left, so I chose a Ute to remind me.

8. Despair! I managed to unlock 2 extra festival locations, but now the game is randomly crashing to desktop. Oh well, waiting for Microsoft to fix their issues is fun as well, right? Right?

That Anniversary update caused more problems than it solved, for me, sadly. Windows search is now almost useless.

I’m going the PC route with Horizon, too - no Ultimate Edition for me, though, so I’ve got a few more days to wait - and, while I’m excited to finally get to play a Forza game on my platform of choice, it’s a right bummer how the Microsoft Store’s pricing means I’ll be paying an extra £12/$16 for the privilege.

These last...lets see...now 4 hours have been one hell of a coaster ride. Game “starts” on the PC, then crashes. Find out that turning off access to the microphone for the game fixes the problem. Great. Play again and it finally loads and get into the game. My computer is a beast 980Ti, i7 4780k @ 4.5ghz, 16 gig of overclocked ram, 2x Samsung 550 SSD in RAID 0. Nothing really makes this sucker sweat. But this game constantly stutters from 144 fps (locked to my gsync monitors max Hz) to 30. Up and down up and down. Also, my Logitech Momo FF wheel doesn’t work, thanks to the pedals not being recognized as -+ axis. It just constantly brakes (turns out this is a problem with many many wheels).

Ok, whatever, I’ll play on the Xbone.

All goes well until its time to select my first car from the showroom. I choose the Urus and the game starts to save. It doesn’t stop saving. For 30 minutes. So I close down the game, full reset the xbox and try again. Except now I’m back to the race against the helicopter/Jeep. So I get all the way back to selecting my ugly Lambo again and it does the same thing.

Fuck.

Look up the forums, apparently I’m not alone with that problem. At least others have it and maybe they will fix. Back to the PC now just farting around, importing my vinyls from past games. FUN! Way to go Playground Games!

Damn. I’ve just finished the update, and I can now install Forza (still doesn’t recognize my RAM and GPU though). Let’s hope it’s playable for me.

I have it working decently now, I think. After tinkering with options and turning off variable framerate and limiting it to 72 fps (Guess this is the highest without putting it up to 144 fps on my monitor?) Framerate is much less jumpy and I’ve almost got myself back to picking the SUV. I’ll give up for the night if it has the same save issue on PC. Feel free to add me, same username and we can race together. Or at least have each others crashtastic drivatars in game.

So far, I’ve only noticed that Microsoft snuck Edge back onto the task bar.

What’s up with the pricing on your end?

Allright, will keep it in mind (FreeSync here) if I run into trouble, thanks!

And will do, though we’re in different time zones (morning here).

Basically, this:

Kinja'd!!!

If I want a digital copy, with Play Anywhere, I have to pay an extra twelve quid over the going rate for a physical copy. It’s a bummer.

I think I’m gonna have to do a Windows repair/reinstall at some point to fix search.

Prime member, got it. I’m on the other end: I’d have preferred a PC-only license, as console games cost €10-20 more than their PC version over here. Still, better to have the game at an inflated cost, than to have to reconsider buying an Xbone.

Oh, it’s actually the same here--I’d have much preferred a PC-only licence. The reason it’s more expensive is that the Microsoft Store kinda gouges on games compared to, well, pretty much everywhere else, from Amazon to GAME, so digital copies of Xbox games - the only copies that include Play Anywhere - are super overpriced.

New drivers came out yesterday ahead of the ultimate launch. My 49gb preload worked without a hitch :/

Somehow my Windows Store app refuses to open after the driver update, but Horizon seems to be working. Preload was not an option for me for some reason (locale probably), and the download changed from 49 to somewhere in the 20s GB during the process. *shrug*

It appears the Anniversary Update acts like a degenerative disease: no issues at first, then my Windows Store failed to open, and now search has indeed stopped working as well. -_-

I randomly crashed to desktop after I upgraded a WRX to rally spec. Fun game, though. I’ve already unlocked the second festival location, Surfer’s Paradise.

There doesn’t seem to be a method to the crashes, though I am able to consistently trigger one in a circuit race in Surfers Paradise. Lots of fun indeed, first went Outback, then Surfers.

What’d you pick as your first car? I couldn’t see any other way but the GT350R. Also, what is your online handle or whatever? Maybe we could play some multi-player once it works properly.

Yes. You can do that. You can also stance almost all the cars.

The Ute, as a reminder to drive on the left, and because Australia. Currently driving a Peugeot 205 T16 in Belga livery for the Outback races (used it to create a Blueprint Bucket List, if you ever come across it) and a Dodge Dart Super Stock for Surfers.

Handle is OutWithaW. I’m in the Oppo club as well, though I still have to figure out the online and club stuff, since I never had XBox Live for the previous titles.
